This project was funded by the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID), whose mandate aligns with FPHCM’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s progress on Sustainable Development Goals 4, 5, 16 and 17.
In southern Taraba, violent conflict is driven by intertwined economic, religious, ethnic and political factors. Resolving it through dialogue rather than violence is essential to lasting peace at community level, where the losses are most devastating.
The project combined sensitisation and advocacy using social and behaviour change communication (SBCC), community mobilisation and capacity building in communities bordering Benue and Taraba States — particularly Wukari, Ukum and Takum Local Government Areas.
It drew on the support of religious and traditional leaders including the Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, the Ter Ukum, the Aku Uka, the Uko Bede of Bete, local government chairmen, the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Muslim Council of Nigeria, the Fulani community and security agencies. About 400 people participated across the three project locations.
There remains a significant need to sustain and scale this work, and to extend it into complementary areas such as livelihoods, shelter, WASH, education, protection and resilience.
